Atlantic County has 274,534 residents across 23 municipalities, from Atlantic City and the barrier island communities to Egg Harbor Township, the most populous at 47,842, and the county seat at Mays Landing. Tree conditions change as you move inland: the county lies along the Atlantic Coastal Plain, its interior is part of the Pine Barrens, and it is included in the Pinelands National Reserve created by Congress in 1978.
That geography decides the work. Lowland areas are swampy and carry pitch pine and white cedar, while upland areas in the western part of the county are hilly and hold oak and pine. Thirteen Atlantic County municipalities sit in the state-designated Pinelands Area, including Hammonton, Galloway, Hamilton and Egg Harbor Township. The Pine Barrens is also prone to forest fires, one more reason to keep dead pine away from structures.
Southern pine beetle pressure is the heaviest documented of any county we serve. In 2010, populations increased and caused widespread tree mortality across Atlantic, Cape May, Ocean and Cumberland counties, affecting more than 14,000 acres, and the New Jersey Forest Service contacted municipalities from Absecon and Buena to Weymouth Township about active infestations in 2011, so there are documented infestations here going back years. Emerald ash borer has since been detected in all 21 New Jersey counties per the USDA Forest Service 2024 New Jersey Forest Health Highlights. We provide tree removal for dead and failing trees and pruning to ANSI A300 standards for those still worth keeping.
Superstorm Sandy made landfall just south of Atlantic City at 8 pm on Monday, October 29, 2012, and many trees and power lines were taken down. Tropical Storm Isaias followed on August 4, 2020, with the county’s highest peak gusts at 66 mph at Pleasantville Point and 66 mph at Atlantic City International, 62 mph at the Forsythe RAWS site and 52 mph near Hammonton.
The June 29-30, 2012 derecho added widespread gusts of 60 to nearly 90 mph across southern New Jersey, with numerous trees and power lines down and hundreds of thousands of customers out, some for at least a week. The remnants of Hurricane Ida on September 1, 2021 brought the county’s highest rainfall report, 2.22 inches at Hammonton 1.7 SW, with no tornado logged in Atlantic County.
We run emergency tree service 24 hours a day throughout the county. Call (856) 457-0196 for a tree on a house, a blocked drive or a hanging limb, stay away from any tree in contact with a wire, and we will bring the equipment the site actually needs.
We have been serving Atlantic County for over 20 years. Bergholz’s Tree Experts LLC is registered with the New Jersey Board of Tree Experts, NJTC Registration #768078, and work is supervised by a New Jersey Licensed Tree Care Operator (Gunar Bergholz, LTCO #862). Around Stockton University in Galloway, Mays Landing and the shore communities we work on houses, rentals, campuses and commercial sites. Pinelands-area properties often need triage, so we rank trees by risk to buildings, drives and lines.
Our average is 4.9 stars across more than 300 Google reviews. Ask for a free estimate and you get a written per-tree scope and a price that does not move.
Atlantic County borders Burlington, Camden and Gloucester counties, and portions of Gloucester County were set off in 1837 to create it. Our base is South Jersey, so we cross those lines constantly.
Just west of the county line, Vineland borders Buena and Buena Vista Township in Atlantic County, and we also cover Millville and Franklinville in the same corridor.
