Gloucester County has 302,294 residents across 24 municipalities, with Woodbury as the county seat, Washington Township the largest by population at 48,677 and Franklin Township the largest by area at 56.39 square miles. The county is largely low-lying rivers and coastal plains, stretching southeast from the Delaware River to the New Jersey Pine Barrens, and it lies entirely within the Coastal Plain province.
Two forest worlds meet here. Most of the county falls in the Inner Coastal Plain region of clays, silts and sands with fragmented woodlands and relict coastal hardwood forests, while Franklin Township and Monroe Township are the two municipalities in the state-designated Pinelands Area. Locally documented canopy includes pine-oak-hickory woods with large oak and tulip poplar at Wenonah, and National Weather Service damage surveys here describe both hardwood and softwood trees, specifically pine and sycamore.
Three pest and disease problems drive removals. Beech leaf disease was detected in Gloucester County for the first time in 2024, caused by the nematode Litylenchus crenatae mccannii. Emerald ash borer has been detected in all 21 New Jersey counties according to the USDA Forest Service 2024 New Jersey Forest Health Highlights. Southern pine beetle has documented infestations in Franklin Township and Monroe Township dating to 2011, on pitch, shortleaf and Virginia pine. We provide tree removal for trees that are past saving and pruning to ANSI A300 standards for the rest.
The single most consequential tree event on record for this county is the EF-3 tornado of September 1, 2021, produced by the remnants of Hurricane Ida. Between 6:10 and 6:30 PM it ran a 12.6-mile path from Harrisonville through Mullica Hill to Deptford with estimated peak winds of 150 mph and two injuries. It damaged trees near Harrisonville, uprooted many trees in Cedar Grove, produced EF-3 structural damage in Willow Oaks, snapped multiple trees near Bridgeton Pike, toppled two grain silos, and caused what the National Weather Service called nearly complete deforestation in a thickly wooded area near Breakneck Road before snapping and uprooting trees near Mantua Township and Wenonah.
Ida rainfall in the county reached 2.06 inches at Monroe Township, 2.05 inches at Washington Township and 1.94 inches at Pitman. Earlier, the June 29-30, 2012 derecho brought gusts of 60 to nearly 90 mph across southern New Jersey with numerous trees and power lines down, and Superstorm Sandy on October 29, 2012 again took down many trees and lines.
We answer emergency calls 24 hours a day anywhere in the county. Call (856) 457-0196 and keep clear of any tree resting on a wire.
