About Elmer, New Jersey

Elmer is a small borough in northeastern Salem County, incorporated in 1893 from parts of Pittsgrove and Upper Pittsgrove townships and once nicknamed “Terrapin Town.” It grew up along Elmer Lake on the Muddy Run, and the West Jersey Railroad reached it in 1862. The fire company still keeps its 1887 hand pumper, the Merrimac, and the David V. Smith House on South Main Street is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Elmer was also the long-time home of the Appel Farm Arts and Music Festival.

Tree Removal and Pruning in Elmer

Elmer’s homes sit close together on older lots. Salem County’s hazard mitigation plan notes that about 68 percent of homes in the borough were built before 1939, and the yard and street trees around them have had close to a century to grow over roofs, porches and power lines.

That kind of work is about precision. Our tree pruning crews reduce weight over roofs and clear limbs away from wires and chimneys, with every cut made to ANSI A300 standards. When a tree has to go, our tree removal crews rig it down in sections where there is no room to drop it, and stump grinding leaves the yard usable afterward.

The Lenape name for the area, Cohockan, meant cedar swamp land, and the borough’s own history credits its very fertile soils for the farms and nurseries around town. Fertile ground grows big trees. Emerald ash borer has now been detected in all 21 New Jersey counties, according to the USDA Forest Service 2024 New Jersey Forest Health Highlights, and beech leaf disease was confirmed in Salem County in 2023, so dead ash and thinning beech are two of the things we look for on an Elmer property.

Emergency Tree Service in Elmer

The June 29-30, 2012 derecho left numerous large tree limbs down in Elmer as it crossed eastern Salem County, according to NOAA storm records. A June 17, 2019 storm brought down multiple trees in the borough, one of them onto the deck of a home, and a May 2021 storm brought down limbs and wires in the same corner of the county.

On older lots, one failed limb can hit a roof, a car and a neighbor’s fence in a single fall. That is why we answer storm calls day and night.

If a tree is on your house, across your driveway or hung up in wires in Elmer, call our 24-hour emergency tree service at (856) 457-0196. Stay well away from anything touching a wire and let the utility make it safe first. We use rigging to take weight off a structure in a controlled order instead of pulling and hoping.
