The county covers an area of 677 square miles and has a population of approximately 150,000 residents. The county seat is Bridgeton, which is also the largest city in the county. Cumberland County has 154,152 residents in 14 municipalities, with Bridgeton as the county seat, Vineland the most populous city at 60,780 and Maurice River Township the largest by area at 95.76 square miles. It is described as a low-lying, generally featureless coastal county with salt marshes near Delaware Bay, and it sits entirely within New Jersey’s Coastal Plain province.
Forest character varies. Part of the county falls in the Inner Coastal Plain region, while Vineland City and Maurice River Township are the two municipalities in the state-designated Pinelands Area. Parvin State Park in nearby Pittsgrove, just under five miles west of Vineland, documents the local mix: upland pine and oak forests, hardwood and Atlantic white cedar swamps, pitch pine lowlands, with dogwood, mountain laurel, holly, magnolia and wild azalea. Public land is everywhere here, including the 16,373-acre Millville (Bevans) Wildlife Management Area.
Pine health is the standout issue. Southern pine beetle was officially recorded in New Jersey in 2001 in Cumberland and Cape May counties, and in 2010 it caused widespread mortality across Atlantic, Cape May, Ocean and Cumberland counties over more than 14,000 acres. The New Jersey Forest Service contacted Deerfield, Fairfield, Lawrence and Maurice River townships plus Millville City and Vineland City about active infestations in 2011, so documented infestations here date back years on pitch, shortleaf and Virginia pine. Wind writes the storm history here. Tropical Storm Isaias on August 4, 2020 produced a 56 mph peak gust at the Millville ASOS, and the National Weather Service logged tree damage with four inches of rain near Newport. The June 29-30, 2012 derecho brought widespread gusts of 60 to nearly 90 mph across southern New Jersey, taking down numerous trees and power lines and leaving hundreds of thousands of customers without power, some for at least a week.
Superstorm Sandy came ashore just south of Atlantic City on October 29, 2012 and took down many trees and power lines across the region. On September 1, 2021 the remnants of Hurricane Ida produced no tornado in Cumberland County, but the highest county rainfall report was 1.94 inches at Millville.
