Wenonah is a 2,283-person Gloucester County borough with an unusually well-documented tree canopy. The borough environmental commission’s trail guide describes pine-oak-hickory woods and records that the wooded area at Comey’s Lake holds some of the largest oak and tulip poplar trees in Wenonah. The borough has 15 named trails, including the one-mile Mantua Creek Trail, the Comey’s Lake Trail, the Glen Trail and the Monongahela Brook Loop Trail, plus Wenonah Lake, Dilks’ Pond, The Glen ravine and Wenonah Park.
Big old trees on small borough lots are the whole job here. We use tree removal when an oak or poplar has decay, a split union or storm damage that cannot be pruned out, and pruning to ANSI A300 standards to reduce end weight, clear roofs and keep those veteran trees standing longer.
Health pressures are documented locally too. Wenonah is named in the National Weather Service survey of the September 1, 2021 EF-3 tornado. The storm, from the remnants of Hurricane Ida, ran 12.6 miles with 150 mph estimated peak winds and snapped and uprooted trees near Mantua Township and Wenonah, mostly destroyed the Delaware Valley Florist greenhouse, damaged roofs and collapsed one structure in Wenonah, and damaged siding and a fence in Woodbury Heights.
That was not the only test. The June 29-30, 2012 derecho brought widespread gusts of 60 to nearly 90 mph across southern New Jersey with numerous trees and power lines down and outages lasting up to a week in some areas, and Superstorm Sandy on October 29, 2012 took down many trees and power lines across the region.
