Salem is the county seat of Salem County, a city on the Salem River whose port was designated in 1682. The Old Salem County Courthouse, built in 1735, is the oldest courthouse in New Jersey still in active use and anchors the Market Street Historic District. Mannington Township borders the city and is home to Mannington Meadows, a 6,000-acre complex of wetlands and tidal water that is a state stronghold for bald eagles. Elsinboro Township lies between the city and Delaware Bay, on the site of Fort Elfsborg, built by the Swedes in 1643.

Salem has some of the oldest building stock in the county. Salem County’s hazard mitigation plan notes that more than half the homes in the city are over 70 years old, and many of them stand under trees nearly as old. The best known of all, the Salem Oak in the Friends Burial Ground, was estimated at 500 to 600 years old when it collapsed in June 2019 after a run of heavy rainstorms.
Old trees next to old houses call for careful work. Our tree pruning crews reduce weight and remove deadwood over roofs and porches, with every cut made to ANSI A300 standards, and our tree removal crews rig trees down in sections when there is no room to fell them.
In Mannington and Elsinboro the picture changes to flat farmland, marsh edge and hedgerows. Mannington is called the heart of Salem County, with 40 percent of its 9,000 farm acres preserved, and Elsinboro’s Abbotts Meadow Wildlife Management Area covers 1,614 acres of fields, meadows and marsh. Farm lanes and fencerows there need limbing, removals and land clearing. Emerald ash borer has now been detected in all 21 New Jersey counties, according to the USDA Forest Service 2024 New Jersey Forest Health Highlights, and beech leaf disease was confirmed in Salem County in 2023.
Flat ground near the Delaware River leaves this corner of the county exposed. NOAA storm records list Salem City, Mannington and Elsinboro among the hardest-hit municipalities when a June 22, 2012 storm brought down numerous trees across the county. A month later, on July 24, 2012, fallen trees closed Griffith Street in the city and trapped a vehicle between them.
It keeps happening. A 58 mph gust was measured in Mannington Township in January 2024, and trees came down on wires in upper Elsinboro on July 16, 2024.
If a tree is on your house, across your driveway or hung up in wires in Salem, Mannington or Elsinboro, call our 24-hour emergency tree service at (856) 457-0196. Stay well away from anything touching a wire and let the utility make it safe first. We use rigging to take weight off a structure in a controlled order instead of pulling and hoping.
