Tree Removal and Pruning in Northern Delaware

New Castle County has 570,719 residents, four cities including Wilmington as the county seat and largest city, eight towns and three villages, including Newark, Middletown and Townsend. Northern Delaware is not Pine Barrens country: the Delaware Forest Service documents upland Piedmont forests here, and the landscape runs from the Brandywine Creek and Christina River corridors to the Chesapeake and Delaware Canal, built between 1822 and 1829.

The species mix matters for the work. Delaware forest health reporting names white ash, northern red oak, white oak, beech, maple, walnut and hemlock in these forests, while loblolly pine is a downstate trait. Public land here includes White Clay Creek State Park at 3,559 acres and Lums Pond at 1,790 acres.

Ash is the big removal story. Ash was around 1 percent of Delaware forests overall, but some upland Piedmont stands in northern New Castle County held up to 7 percent ash, and widespread emerald ash borer damage first became visible from the air around 2020. The 2024 aerial survey mapped 730 acres of additional EAB damage, down from 2,550 acres in 2023, because most Delaware ash stands are already damaged. Dead ash loses strength quickly, which is a rigging problem as well as a safety one. We provide tree removal and pruning to ANSI A300 standards throughout the county.

Emergency Tree Service in Northern Delaware

Tropical Storm Isaias on August 4, 2020 is the marquee tree event for northern Delaware. An EF2 tornado with 115 mph estimated peak winds tracked 35.5 miles from Kent County into New Castle County, setting a new Delaware path-length record. Hundreds of trees were down or uprooted in Brennan Estates, more were snapped along Blackbird Landing Road and Gum Bush Road in Townsend, and peak gusts reached 96 mph at a DelDOT station northwest of Smyrna Landing and 59 mph at Wilmington.

The June 29-30, 2012 derecho pushed across northern Delaware with widespread gusts of 60 to nearly 90 mph, numerous trees and power lines down and hundreds of thousands without power for up to a week. On September 1, 2021 the remnants of Hurricane Ida produced the highest county rainfall totals anywhere in Delaware: 5.86 inches west-southwest of Wilmington and 5.63 inches at Pike Creek.

We answer emergency calls 24 hours a day. Call (856) 457-0196 for a tree on a house, garage or car, and stay clear of anything in contact with a utility line until it is de-energised.

Why Northern Delaware Property Owners Choose Bergholz's

We have been serving New Castle County for over 20 years. Bergholz’s Tree Experts LLC is registered with the New Jersey Board of Tree Experts, NJTC Registration #768078, and work is supervised by a New Jersey Licensed Tree Care Operator (Gunar Bergholz, LTCO #862). We are fully insured, a TCIA member, and all pruning is performed to ANSI A300 standards.

Two diseases explain a lot of the calls we get from Wilmington-area homeowners. Beech leaf disease was first reported positive in New Castle County in 2023, with more positives found in 2024 at White Clay Creek State Park. Bacterial leaf scorch, caused by Xylella fastidiosa subspecies multiplex, has been common and widespread in Delaware since at least the mid-2000s, and many landscape-planted red oaks showed late-summer symptoms, branch dieback and mortality in 2024.

We do residential and commercial tree service from Wilmington through Newark, Bear and Middletown, working to ANSI A300 standards with full clean-up. Our average is 4.9 stars across more than 300 Google reviews.
