Pittsgrove Township covers the southeastern corner of Salem County, bordering Vineland and Deerfield in Cumberland County and Franklin Township in Gloucester County. It takes in Olivet, Norma, Centerton, Alliance, Willow Grove, Parvin Lake and Rainbow Lake, and it is the site of the 1882 Alliance Colony, whose Moshe Bayuk House was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2012. Parvin State Park lies entirely within the township, and the Union Lake, Elmer Lake and Rainbow Lake wildlife management areas and The Nature Conservancy’s Willow Grove Lake Preserve add thousands of acres of protected woods and water.

Pittsgrove is one of the most wooded townships in Salem County. Its open space plan puts forest at 37.4 percent of the township, most of it deciduous, with another 18.8 percent in wetlands, much of that wooded swamp. The township sits on the edge of the Pine Barrens, and the same plan notes the many mature pine forests that remain. Plenty of homes along Route 40, Route 56, Route 540 and Route 553 back right onto those woods.
Parvin State Park shows the mix well: Atlantic white cedar swamp, lowland pine and upland pine-oak forest, with at least 50 tree species including pitch pine, red maple, several oaks and black cherry. Those are the trees we work on across Pittsgrove. Our tree removal crews take down pines and hardwoods leaning over houses, sheds and long driveways, and our tree pruning lifts and thins limbs, with every cut made to ANSI A300 standards.
Pine health deserves attention here. The New Jersey Forest Service contacted Pittsgrove Township about active southern pine beetle infestations on private or municipal land in August 2011, and crews found and suppressed active infestations at Parvin State Park in early 2014. Emerald ash borer has now been detected in all 21 New Jersey counties, according to the USDA Forest Service 2024 New Jersey Forest Health Highlights, and beech leaf disease was confirmed in Salem County in 2023. If a pine is browning from the top or an ash is thinning out, have it looked at before it turns into a removal over a roof.
Pittsgrove took one of the hardest hits in South Jersey during the June 29-30, 2012 derecho. NOAA storm records describe about four dozen 80-foot trees uprooted at a single farm in the township and several hundred large trees knocked down or damaged in Parvin State Park, where a falling pine top killed two boys in their tent. By early August 2012, 938 trees had been removed from the park.
Smaller storms keep the pattern going. NOAA logged trees down across the township in July 2011, trees down around Centerton and Porchtown Roads in August 2011, and trees and wires down near Crow Pond Road in Willow Grove in February 2020.
If a tree is on your house, across your driveway or hung up in wires in Pittsgrove, call our 24-hour emergency tree service at (856) 457-0196. Stay well away from anything touching a wire and let the utility make it safe first. We use rigging to take weight off a structure in a controlled order instead of pulling and hoping.
