Winter can be rough on trees—freezing temps, ice, and snow can really take a toll. Trees are pretty tough, but a little extra care can make a big difference in keeping them healthy through the cold months. Here’s what you can do to help your trees handle winter:
1. Mulch for Insulation
Spread 2-4 inches of mulch around the base of your trees to help keep the soil temperature stable and hold in moisture. Just make sure to keep the mulch a few inches away from the trunk to prevent rot.
2. Wrap Young Trees
Young trees are more vulnerable to the cold. Wrapping their trunks with burlap or tree wrap can protect them from cracking due to temperature changes and from harsh winds.
3. Water Before the Freeze
Hydrated trees are stronger trees. Water them deeply before the ground freezes to help them retain moisture throughout the winter. Just don’t overdo it—soggy soil can harm the roots.
4. Protect Against Snow and Ice Damage
Heavy snow and ice can break branches. Gently brush off snow with a broom, but don’t shake the branches—they’re more fragile in the cold. Prune weak or dead branches ahead of winter to prevent damage.
5. Guard Against Wildlife
Hungry animals like deer, rabbits, and rodents can damage tree bark during winter. Use tree guards or wrap trunks with hardware cloth to keep critters off the merchandise.
6. Avoid Using Salt Nearby
Salt from de-icing can harm your trees by soaking into the soil and damaging roots. Use alternatives like sand or gravel near trees to keep them safe.
