Salem County has 64,837 residents in 15 municipalities, with Salem as the county seat, Pennsville Township the most populous at 12,684 and Lower Alloways Creek the largest by area at 72.46 square miles. It is an almost uniformly flat coastal plain, bounded on the west by the Delaware River and crossed by the Salem River.
The whole county sits in New Jersey’s Coastal Plain province and is named in the Inner Coastal Plain region, whose character is clays, silts and sands with ironstone ridges, agricultural land, extensive grasslands, fragmented woodlands, relict coastal hardwood forests, tidal freshwater marshes and riparian corridors. No Salem County municipality is in the state-designated Pinelands Area, though Parvin State Park in Pittsgrove is described as just outside the edge of the Pine Barrens, with upland pine and oak forests, hardwood and Atlantic white cedar swamps and pitch pine lowlands.
Two disease problems shape removals here. Beech leaf disease was detected in Salem County in 2023 and the county hosts one of the twelve long-term monitoring plots established in 2021. Emerald ash borer has been detected in all 21 New Jersey counties according to the USDA Forest Service 2024 New Jersey Forest Health Highlights. Southern pine beetle has documented infestations in Pittsgrove and Upper Pittsgrove townships dating to 2011, and it was suppressed at Parvin State Park in January 2014. Salem County’s storm damage comes mainly from straight-line wind and saturated ground. The June 29-30, 2012 derecho crossed southern New Jersey and northern Delaware with widespread gusts of 60 to nearly 90 mph, taking down numerous trees and power lines and leaving hundreds of thousands of customers without power, some for at least a week. Superstorm Sandy on October 29, 2012 took down many trees and power lines and produced record water levels in the tidal Delaware River near Philadelphia.
On September 1, 2021 the remnants of Hurricane Ida produced no tornado in Salem County, and the highest county rainfall report was 1.81 inches at Woodstown. The EF-3 tornado that day began near Harrisonville, immediately across the Gloucester and Salem line from Upper Pittsgrove.
