Washington Township is the most populous municipality in Gloucester County with 48,677 residents, taking in Turnersville, Grenloch, Sewell, Hurffville, Bells Lake, Green Tree and Mount Pleasant. It is heavily developed suburban ground threaded by Greentree Road, Egg Harbor Road, Ganttown Road, Hurffville-Crosskeys Road, Route 42, Route 47 and Route 55, with Washington Lake Park and Bells Lake Park as its green anchors.
Gloucester County lies entirely in New Jersey’s Coastal Plain and is named in the Inner Coastal Plain region of fragmented woodlands and relict coastal hardwood forests. Before that, the June 29-30, 2012 derecho crossed southern New Jersey with widespread gusts of 60 to nearly 90 mph, taking down numerous trees and power lines and leaving hundreds of thousands without power for up to a week. Superstorm Sandy on October 29, 2012 again brought down many trees and lines across the region.
